Slavery in New Zealand is more widespread than people realise.

That's according to the author of a New Zealand Medical Journal study on modern forms of slavery, which includes worker exploitation and forced marriage.

Lead author, Doctor Paula King told Larry Williams the human rights abuse is happening in a huge list of sectors.

"Dairy, horticulture, construction, fishing, and sex work, hospitality, domestic work but also quite concerning for house work as it's occurring in the house work and aged care sectors."

She said health workers should be trained to notice the red flags of exploitation.
