There are hopes to make all new vehicles bought in New Zealand have an automatic braking system.

Studies have shown Autonomous Emergency Braking leads to 40 percent fewer collisions.

The technology uses sensors, lasers, cameras and radar to automatically detect obstacles and automatically brake to prevent a crash.

Volvo New Zealand General Manager Coby Duggan says the European Union and United States are pushing to make it mandatory in new vehicles.

He told Mike Hosking governments getting behind the technology would make it more widely available.

"It would relate to new cars sold first. It wouldn't happen overnight, it would just be about accelerating the roll out over time."
