Countdown is likely to be a trailblazer as more New Zealand retailers cut back on plastic use
The chain's phasing out plastic bags because it's worried about the environmental impact
First Retail Group Managing Director, Chris Wilkinson told Larry Williams this isn't a surprising move by the supermarket chain.
"This has been very much something that many of the retail chains are eyeing, we know it's necessary and it's really pleasing that Countdown has given it pace."
Wilkinson said we're moving away from single use products as a country.
"We're going to start to see a push on other things like plastic drink bottles, even those disposable coffee cups coming through which is exactly what's happening overseas."
