ACC claims, complaints and a local body politician's near miss has prompted Auckland Council to urgently look into the safety of the new e-scooters.

Councillor Christine Fletcher came within an inch of being taken out by a scooter - prompting mayor Phil Goff to seek a report on their safety.

The same discussion is being had around the world with a San Diego City Council committee yesterday voting to create a new set of rules regulating the scooters.

San Diego City Councillor Barbara Bry told Mike Hosking the first step is getting people to wear helmets.

"We are also asking that companies reduce the speeds and in certain areas I want them totally banned."
