Children's Commissioner: Drop in child poverty a positive first step

A reduction in child poverty's being seen as a positive platform to move forward from.

The latest Child Poverty Monitor shows 50,000 kids have been lifted out of poverty over a year.

But 400,000 are still going without basic necessities and 80,000 are in severe poverty.

Children's Commissioner Judge Andrew Becroft told Mike Hosking we're starting to see the benefits of a strong economy and the $25 a week increase for beneficiary families.

"I think we're seeing a greater commitment from the community and the charitable sector as well. So I think it's a good example of government and community joined up working together."
