Where would Team New Zealand be, without New Zealand?

Doubt is being cast on suggestions the America's Cup holders will take their 2021 defence offshore.

The syndicate said while it is negotiating to host the defence in Auckland, it is receiving lucrative offers from overseas.

Former Auckland City Councillor Scott Milne was involved in organising the 2000 and 2003 regattas.

He said while the overseas offers sound impressive, Team New Zealand can't afford to leave New Zealand.

''Team New Zealand would lose the support of New Zealand, the extra one per cent that the yacht had came from being a national side.''
