Christchurch's drinking water must be chlorinated until pipes are fixed.
That's the view of Canterbury's Medical Officer of Health, Alistair Humphrey.
The city's drinking water is drawn from 156 wells, located at 56 sites across the city.
Since the earthquakes, a number of the bores sit below ground-level and are at risk from contamination from flood and surface water.
Canterbury's Medical Officer of Health, Alistair Humphrey told Mike Hosking the pipes are being repaired.
"They are a risk until they are repaired and chlorination is the only barrier Christchurch will have for the contamination of their water."
Councillors will decide tomorrow whether to temporarily chlorinate the water
