Doctors say they'll be using systems that already exist to monitor any effects from the Zika virus in this country.
Paediatricians are going to start reporting every baby that has a brain abnormality, if its parents have been in countries that have the virus.
That reporting starts from next week.
Epidemiologist Nigel Dickson told Mike Hosking it's vital the virus is better understood here.
"I think it's helpful for us, because I think it'll get a better confirmation of the situation in New Zealand, so from that point of view it's necessary because that means appropriate policy can be offered."
