An Auckland intermediate's defending its social media-free policy.
Kowhai Intermediate in Kingsland wants parents to ban their kids from social media both at school and at home - amid concerns around cyber bullying.
Board of Trustees Chair Wade Gillooly told Kerre McIvor the proposal makes sense, as Facebook itself has an age limit of 13.
"These kids are going to get onto social media in due course. But 11 and 12, we're saying they're not ready, legally they're not ready, we want them to have real relationships in the school playground."
Gillooly says most parents are on-board with the proposal.
"We've had overwhelmingly positive support in favour of going social media free. We've got two exceptions, I think, from when I last looked at the returns, so it's pretty powerful."
The hardline stance has been backed by experts, who say parents should be responsible for monitoring their children in the online world.
Numerous incidents have emerged nationwide in recent years of humiliating 'sext' pics being sent among friends, trolling and hurtful online posts, and fights filmed on mobile phones then footage uploaded onto Facebook.
