Auckland Council's $42 million salary budget blow out is being described as a disgrace.

The annual report shows one in five council staff earn more than one hundred thousand dollars a year.

The number of executives earning more than $200,000 has increased from 155 to 194.

Auckland Ratepayers Alliance spokesperson Jo Holmes told Newstalk ZB's Rachel Smalley all that money is coming from ratepayers' pockets.

"Fifty-two percent now of all the money that council collects gets spent on wages and salaries, and most of it seems to be going at the higher end. This cannot be good for Auckland especially when services are being cut all the time."
