Community leaders are concerned a police operation tackling liquor store and dairy robberies in Auckland isn't dealing with the root cause of crime.
Operation Dukan will see around 20 ethnic police officers visit stores throughout the region giving shop owners key safety information.
Indian Association of New Zealand vice president Ram Lingam told Larry Williams shop owners understand police are working under tough conditions.
But he says it increasingly seems they are stretched, with a spate of robberies from Takanini to one yesterday in Mt Roskill.
"They underlying problem is there is no fear for breaking the law," Lingam said.
"What the police are doing is really appreciated but [they're] not attacking the real cause of it."
Lingam said shop owners are becoming frustrated and are responding by arming themselves as a last resort.
