Mental health care not good enough: Children's Commissioner

A vulnerable teenager in state care is living alone in a hotel - despite him attempting suicide two weeks ago.

The 16-year-old has been in and out of residential care since he was 12 but had been placed in a Dunedin hotel this week due to a shortage of residential care facility beds.

Judge Andrew Becroft, the Children's Commissioner, told Larry Williams New Zealand's mental health service are under-equipped, and the government needs to step up.
