A mass evacuation's been ordered from Vanuatu's Ambae Island but that's not stopping two GNS scientists.

A New Zealand volcanologist is heading to Vanuatu to help, as a volcano rumbles there.

An entire island in the country is being evacuated following volcanic activity on Ambae Island.

Around 6000 people were forced to flee their homes earlier this week after recent activity raised fears for a major eruption.

GNS volcanologist Brad Scott said they'll be studying multiple volcanoes while helping other scientists.

"To support the GeoHazards team, they don't have a lot of resource, they've been working really hard, they're getting tired so we're going up thereto help those guys."

Scott said the team will be in need of his assistance

"Basically they've been doing 24 hour runs and they're really tired and they just need to be replaced and supported and helped get through this peak of the crisis."

Brad Scott said the GeoHazards team has been making assessments, recording data and passing it on to their government.
