The Anglican synod has proposed gifting the Christchurch Cathedral to the government, making it a public building.
The cathedral has been derelict since the 2011 earthquakes which caused significant damage.
Architect Gordon Moller, who designed Auckland's Sky Tower, says he'd like to see a contemporary structure built out of the ruins of the old cathedral.
He says all proposals for the cathedral's future have some merit, but he'd be disappointed if the iconic building disappeared completely.
