There's been a 4.3 magnitude aftershock in the Italian town of Amatrice.

Wednesday's original big quake was 6.2 on the Richter scale.

Italy correspondent Sabina Castelfranco said it happened a few hours ago and scared everyone.

She told Rachel Smalley another part of a medieval clock tower has collapsed, injuring a police officer who emerged with blood all over his face.

"They are really working in very complicated conditions, although they have all the equipment that they now need to clear up the area, the fact that these aftershocks are taking place is not making it any easier."

Sabina Castelfranco said rescuers are using sniffer dogs, diggers, shovels, pickaxes and cranes to get people out.

The death toll is more than 240.
