New Zealand children's reading levels have fallen to their lowest level on record in the world rankings.

The latest Progress in International Reading Literacy Study found New Zealand slipped 10 places from 22 out of 41 countries in 2011 down to 32 out of 50 last year.

Australia, Austria, Slovenia and Spain ranked higher than us.

Director for the Learning Staircase Ros Lugg told Rachel Smalley we need to adopt more structured learning methods - like other countries.

"In the UK you teach certain patterns first things like your 'th' sound your 'ai' patterns and there's a structured method of actually going through all of those different patterns which actually teach learners how language works."
