Polls in the German election have closed, with Chancellor Angela Merkel's CDU/CSU union holding an early lead over the Social Democratic Party.

It's the first election since the refugee crisis, which saw more than one million refugees enter the country - leading to a rise in far-right populism.

Washinghton Post reporter Rick Noack is in Berlin.

He told Rachel Smalley Angela Merkel's management of the economy seems to have prevented any fallout from the refugee crisis.

"The German economy has been performing very well over the last years and that is certainly something that played into the hands of Angela Merkel."
