Report shows worn tyres linked to fatal crashes

Motorists are being advised to check their tyres every month to keep safe on the roads.

The newly released draft Policy Statement on Land Transport focuses on median strips and other roading improvements.

However, there's concern it doesn't look at how to improve vehicle standards, like worn tyres, which are linked to nine percent of fatal crashes.

Richard Bosselman from MotoringNZ.com told Kate Hawkesby MTA advises people to upgrade tyres once they reach three millimetres, rather than the minimum of 1.5 millimetres.

"It's certainly a good idea to inspect your tyres monthly. All you need to do is inspect the pressure and tread depths. It's maybe a couple minutes' examination."

Bosselman says lives depend on the condition of the tyres.

"Becuase the only contact the car has with the road is the tyre. It's certainly a wake up call that last year over half a million vehicles failed warrants because their tyres were in poor condition."

Bosselman thinks changes to the Warrant of Fitness system were a mistake but thinks it will be hard to go back.
