The Salvation Army says New Zealand needs to increase its number of social houses from 82,000 to over 100,000 in the next decade - half of which need to be in Auckland.

The government says it will be expanding to 72,000 over the next three years.

Labour's housing spokesperson Phil Twyford says Labour will increase state housing by a minimum of 1000 a year to keep up with a growing population.

Labour also vows to build 100,000 affordable homes over 10 years to increase home ownership among young Kiwis.

Twyford says National has been "appalling" at investing in the local workforce, and says a Labour government would invest heavily in infrastructure to create more work opportunities for skilled tradespeople.
