Four major fires are raging in California and are set to be fuelled by winds of up to 80 kilometres an hour today.

Tens of thousands of people are affected.

New Zealand's Consul-General in Los Angeles, Maurice Williamson, said the consulate and his residence are being impacted by the Skirball Fire.

He told Rachel Smalley 15 multi-million dollar mansions in the nearby suburb of Bel-Air have been completely destroyed by it.

"If you go up there as I did yesterday, the flames are leaping into the air higher than you would see coming out of a big gas factory. It's just horrendous."

Williamson said the fire has been moving one football field per second.
