An environmental game changer for farmers.

A Southland farm is powering it's cow shed and heating water with a machine that turns methane effluent into electricity

The process involves extracting greenhouse gases from effluent, and changing it into carbon dioxide.

Dairy Green Agriculture and engineering consultant, John Scandrett said it's taken 13 years to make the idea a reality.

He told Andrew Dickens now it's exceeding their expectations.

"Expectation was we would be able to run the generator for about eight hours a day but last November we were running it for up to 16 hours a day, just to use the amount of gas we were getting."
