Catalonia's future hangs in the balance this morning.

Their leader Carles Puigdemont is set to formally announce the results of their independence vote this morning New Zealand time - but at this stage will not announce Catalonia's plans.

Unofficial estimates had the vote at 90 percent wanting to break away from Spain.

However the vote is heavily skewed with only 2.2 million out of a possible 7.5 million people taking part.

Owner of Barcelona's City FM, Jim Kent, told Rachel Smalley if the result follows the mood on the street, action will need to be taken quickly.

"Parliament would need to ratify this and make a vote. That is not scheduled for tonight, nevertheless Madrid might choose to taken action and intervene at this point of they wish."
