The Police Commissioner was apparently alerted to the potential risk of appointing Wally Haumaha as an Assistant Commissioner.

His appointment's being questioned after it was revealed he'd sympathised with those accused in the Louise Nicholas rape allegations.

Deputy Commissioner Mike Clement was second-in-charge of the investigation into the claims.

The Herald has revealed Clement had warned Police Commissioner Mike Bush about Haumaha's past and the potential threat to the reputation of police if he was promoted.

Herald reporter, Jared Savage, says told Kate Hawkesby]despite Winston Peters calling for a review, there's a lack of urgency.

"Simon Bridges has been quoted in our story saying the inquiry must interview basically all of the members of the police executive to see find out exactly what they knew about Mike Clements' warning."
