There is political turmoil in the UK after Theresa May's call for a snap election in early June.

Standing outside her Downing Street office, May said she had been reluctant about asking parliament to back her move to bring forward the poll from 2020, but decided it was necessary to try to stop the opposition "jeopardising" her work on Brexit.

Editor of Politics.co.uk Ian Dunt told Nadine Higgins the argument the Prime Minister is making doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

"And it's hard to imagine it would be accepted by the public," he said.

"That doesn't mean she'll lose the election, she's very unlikely to lose the election, but even on a generous reading it's very hard to see any way in which her argument makes sense."

Dunt said she's taking advantage of her 20 point lead in the polls, before the economic and political effects of Brexit are felt by the public.

"What she's really trying to do is take her short-term advantage and use it to consolidate her position for the long-term game ahead, and that's a pretty canny strategy, even if the arguments she's used to do so don't stand up to scrutiny."
