New Zealand is moving closer to faster data connection speeds as trialling begins.
Spark has opened a live trial of 5G technology in Wellington, and a 5G trial lab is opening in Auckland later in the year.
It's expected the technology will be fully available in two years, and has potential to be 10 times faster than current 4G capabilities.
But Gorilla Technology chief executive Paul Spain told Kate Hawkesby users will have to be close to cell sites to access top speed once it's running.
"Expect there to be a lot more cell sites around because in order to get those top speeds you have to be quite close to a site. It also brings the challenge of putting more cell sites into neighbourhoods."
