A British academic says the death of the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un shows a great deal of instability within the country.

Kim Jong-Nam was killed in Malaysia last week.

The apparent assassination has brought back calls to re-list North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism for the first time in nine years.

Hazel Anne Smith, director of the International Institute of Korean Studies at the University of Central Lancashire, said there are considerable rifts and tensions among those who control the country.

"It may not have been Kim Jong-Un that directed this attack, but another group within the state that wanted to show to Kim Jong-Un that he and his family are at risk."

Hazel Anne Smith said the death would pose a challenge for the Trump administration.

"How is it going to come to a solution to this problem? Is it going to negotiate? Is it going to go to war, which nobody really wants?"
