Publishing the pay rates of different genders would play a big role in closing the pay gap.
This from Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner Jackie Blue.
It comes as a bill is drawn from the parliamentary ballot, which would require employers to create gender pay transparency indexes.
Dr Blue told Rachel Smalley it would give unequal employers a wake-up call.
"Businesses are naturally competitive. They won't want to be at the bottom of the heap, they'll want to do better. And publishing that gap is the motivation for change."
Dr Blue said it's something that's already being done in the public sector.
"When we first started rating our DHBs they were all over the show - some were good at this, some were bad at that - but over time they've all lifted their game."
