Victoria's voluntary euthanasia bill is being seen as historic.
The assisted dying bill passed 22 votes to 18 late yesterday and the Lower House is expected to rubber stamp it next week.
Australian correspondent Donna Demaio said there have been about 50 attempts by various state parliaments over two decades to introduce such legislation.
She told Rachel Smalley a specific group of Victorians will be able to request a prescription of lethal drugs to end their life.
"All terminally ill Victorians from 2019 with less than six months to live or 12 months with a neurodegenerative illness."
She said in the 90s, the Northern Territory had a Rights of the Terminally Ill Act, but that was overturned by the federal government at the time.
