Time constraints and logistical issues have stalled the people-powered bid to keep Pineapple Lumps in Dunedin.
Dunedin Manufacturing Holding has pulled out of the 'Own the Factory' campaign.
Dr David Bishop of the Otago University Business School, who worked at the factory for 17 years, told Rachel Smalley he's not sure Kiwis place that much importance on their favourite chocolate being locally produced and owned anyway.
"The strange thing is a lot of the brands are in fact not really New Zealand brands at all. They're international brands, but here in New Zealand we've accepted them as part of being New Zealand."
