A healthy food campaigner is calling for a massive change to the Health Star Rating system.

A review of the progress of the system's roll out is expected today.

Food Safety Minister David Bennett is likely to make an announcement this afternoon from Sydney, alongside Australian health officials.

Lawyer Claire Deeks told Nadine Higgins she wants the system to start from scratch, because some foods with a lot of sugar get a high rating - because bonus points are given if there's high fibre or protein to offset the sugar.

"If we can just go for something where there's a pictorial representation such as the sugar, maybe that's going to get us out of there. I don't see how we can pull back from where we are now."

The system rates food out of five stars, according to how healthy it is.

However, it's attracted criticism for things like giving a four star rating to breakfast cereal Nutrigrain which has 27 percent sugar, and 4.5 stars to Milo which has 46 percent sugar.
