Students are missing the essential skills to make it at university.

A review by The New Zealand Qualifications Authority reveals university entrance students lack the basic skills they need to be successful at a tertiary level.

University New Zealand Chief Executive Chris Whelan said the NCEA curriculum is flexible, so doesn't require students to formally develop academic skills.

He told Rachel Smalley students are needing help with essay writing.

"Schools are able to build much more engaging kind of curricula, but they don't need to necessarily focus on some of the more academic skills like essay writing."
