Rank and file police have some worries about coalition government plans to boost staffing in rural areas with volunteer police.
Police Association president Chris Cahill said they need to know more details.
He told Nadine Higgins if they're volunteers working alongside rural officers and supporting them, it's not a bad idea.
"If it was actual volunteers with powers who would be deployed without other police officers there, I don't think that's what we should be heading towards."
He said it would be better to roll out the promised 1800 new recruits into rural areas.
