Sex workers say more elderly men are turning to prostitutes - simply for affection and company.

The New Zealand Prostitute Collective said sex workers play a critical part in some people's lives, especially those who are lonely.

National Coordinator Catherine Healy told Kate Hawkesby in these cases, it's about lending an ear to the client.

"Attachment issues and so on, can come up and certainly there's a vulnerability that we're aware of."

She said ageing baby boomers can usually afford the exchange - but sometimes sex workers can notice financial problems.

"People can get really, really attached and they can burn the budget so that can be picked up by sex workers as well and advice could be given in that respect."
