LISTEN ABOVE: Bryan Caldwell spoke to Rachel Smalley
Kiwi Bryan Caldwell is the project manager overseeing six scientists who've been living in a dome on the Hawaiian mountain, Mauna Loa, simulating life on Mars.
He told Rachel Smalley the project wasn't always easy.
"In the workplace if you have a conflict with somebody you can walk away from it. We found openness, which is often used to diffuse conflict in the workplace, doesn't work in confinement because you can't walk away."
Project manager Bryan Caldwell said it was extremely challenging at times.
"What we do create is the isolation and confinement. It's in a lava field and very few people go there."
