Atmospheric scientist: Ozone healing after banning of CFC's

There's evidence the hole has shrunk following a worldwide ban on chlorofluorocarbons, that was kicked off by the first international treaty in 1987.

It follows a worldwide ban on chlorofluorocarbons, which used to be in fridges.

The first international treaty was signed in 1987 and eventually, all countries around the globe ratified it.

NASA atmospheric scientist Dr Susan Strahan told Kate Hawkesby there's evidence the ozone hole is getting a bit smaller and ozone depletion is reducing.

"The chlorine the that comes from CFC's is going down and we are also seeing that the amount if depletion in ozone is less."

Strahan said the hole will be bigger in the years when it's colder in the Antarctic.

But she said the ozone hole will be smaller in years when temperatures in the Antarctic are higher.

"So the size of the ozone hole is going to wobble up and down, but it will gradually get smaller and hopefully be gone by 2080."

Strahan said it's important countries around the world stick to treaties banning CFCs.
