The housing crisis could be a key opportunity to build more green homes.
That's according to Passive House Canada, that says green homes are healthier, more energy efficient, and produce less waste during the construction process.
New Zealand Green Building chief executive Andrew Eagles says homes built according to Homestar environmental standards have a number of advantages.
"If we were to build to Homestar and Kiwibuild, people in those homes would be saving over $100-million a year off their energy bills."
Homestar is an environmental and energy efficiency rating-system for Kiwi homes.
