The end-date of the US election may be in sight, but it's anyone's guess as to when the Clinton email saga will come to a close.

The FBI has been granted permission to rifle through newly-discovered emails related to Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.

US Correspondent Jennifer Strong told Rachel Smalley there are conflicting reports as to how long it will take the FBI to scan through the 650,000 emails discovered on the laptop of disgraced former New York congressman Anthony Weiner.

"We have no idea what they are. They might be duplicates of email the FBI has already investigated, they might be the controversial emails marked as personal and deleted by Clinton's attorneys, and if so they might be exactly that, and personal."

Jennifer Strong said the general consensus seems to be that it's unlikely the new investigation will lead to an indictment.

However, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are all but tied in the latest polls.

Some have Trump ahead, others have Clinton in front, depending on who, how and where they've been put together.

Strong said while the race is tight, Hillary Clinton is still favoured to win.

"Perhaps 20% of likely voters have already voted. Early voting favours Clinton, the ground game also favours Clinton, reports suggest she has a 3-1 advantage in terms of staffing in battleground states."
