There's been a full scale emergency at Napier Airport after an ATR72 turbo-prop's engine failure.

Fire and Emergency positioned fire trucks on the runway as the plane circled, dumping fuel.

Talkback caller Paul told Andrew Dickens it was obvious there was a problem with the plane almost immediately after take-off.

"It was the most unusual, it wasn't climbing either it was flattening out, it was definite misfiring malfunctioning engine."
