There have been ugly scenes on the streets of Palmerston North overnight, as police came under fire from bottle-throwing youths.

Fifteen police donned riot gear to deal with a crowd of youths which swelled to around 150.

They had spilled out onto Ferguson Street from parties in the area.

The crowd was dispersed, with no arrests or injuries reported.
