Native birds head for Mokoia

23/05/2006 9:28:04

A number of native birds will have a new home on Mokoia Island, in the middle of Lake Rotorua, from Saturday.

Five kokako pairs will be shifted from the Kaharoa Forest area in a bid to expand the local territory of the endangered bird.

Kaharoa Kokako Trust Chairman Peter Davey says the move is possible because the Kaharoa population has reached a healthy and sustainable level.

He says Mokoia Island is also an ideal location because it is predator free.

Mr Davey is hopeful the 10 Kokako will thrive in these conditions.
