Motutapu Island access restored

24/04/2006 17:24:02

Public access is being restored to what is being described as Auckland's most significant World War Two facility, Motutapu Island

In honour of Anzac Day, Auckland Mayor, Dick Hubbard and former Mayor Christine Fletcher will tonight launch a DVD entitled The Guns of Motutapu which is designed to educate young and old about the island's history. Auckland City Council will also work with a number of organisations to restore Motutapu Island's wharf and create a new visitor centre.

The island housed long-range guns and was the only strategic counter-bombardment unit in the country during World War Two.

Mayor Hubbard says Motutapu holds a a very special place in the hearts of Aucklanders.
