Maori Party stumbling block

12/10/2005 12:50:05

Helen Clark's difficulty in forming a Government is being exacerbated by the Maori Party's wavering position.

Political editor Barry Soper says Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia instigated a meeting with National, New Zealand First and United Future with the intention of exploring the possibility of forming a centre-right Government.

He says the fact that the meeting was instigated by Mrs Turia shows the depth of the Maori Party's disenchantment with Labour.

The possibility of National leader Don Brash going to the Governor-General is not causing any upset in the United Future camp, which is vehemently anti-Green. New Zealand First would prefer to give the Greens the cold shoulder as well.

Mr Soper says the only problem with a National/Maori Party linkage is National's hard-line one-rule-for-all position.
