Labour a bunch of tosspots

21/08/2005 8:10:02

United Future has given its support to the Labour-led Government for the past three years, but one of its MPs says it has been wasted on the issue of law and order.

Marc Alexander believes there is little point in his party sitting down with what he calls a bunch of socialist tosspots after the election, and trying to tackle the real issue of crime.

Mr Alexander says his party has to have a strong partner and National would be better on that issue than Labour.

Mr Alexander is fourth on the United Future List.

But his comment is thought to be something of an embarrassment for the party.

Initially, party leader Peter Dunne appeared relaxed about Mr Alexander's views, saying he is entitled to them.

Mr Dunne says New Zealand is a robust, democratic country and he did not have any problem with what Mr Alexander said.

On further reflection he appeared to change his tune, saying it is helpful in the middle of an election campaign if everyone sticks to the party line.
