Spencer and Mehrts to UK?

19/04/2005 12:36:02

The rumour mill is heating up over two former All Black first fives.

Andrew Mehrtens' link with London club Harlequins has been well documented, while Carlos Spencer is now being linked to the Warriors and also Northampton in England.

The Warriors might be a long shot, with England a strong possibility for Spencer.

Northampton halfback and Spencer's former Blues teammate Mark Robinson says stranger things have happened.

He says Northampton is a fantastic club and Spencer would fit right in.

Meanwhile, Robinson says Harlequins denial overnight of any Mehrtens signing usually means the club has definitely signed the player.

Harlequins spokesman Nick Melton says the club will not make any comment on the issue until the end of the current English season.

But Robinson says where there is smoke there is fire.

He says from what he knows Mehrtens wanted to be in London and Quins are willing to pay some big money for quality players.

But Mehrtens' current teammates are unfazed by all the speculation surrounding his future.

Crusaders second five Aaron Mauger says they have not talked about Mehrtens' rumoured departure to Harlequins.

Mauger says he would be genuinely surprised if the veteran leaves his dearly beloved red and black country.

He says as far as he knows Dave Hewett and Justin Marshall are the only Canterbury players that have signed overseas.

Mauger says it is up to Mehrts in the end, but he has been very loyal to Canterbury in the past.

He says his teammate is just looking forward to getting through the Super 12 and hopefully making the All Black team for the Lions series.
