Germany a driving inspiration

03/03/2010 10:56:01

A motoring expert believes raising the does not even begin to scratch the service of what is needed to fix New Zealand's driving woes.

The Government has released its road safety strategy today, which includes lifting the the driving age from 15 to 16 and a zero alcohol tolerance for youth drivers.

Motoring expert Allan Dick says the idea is so stupid, he cannot believe it has come from intelligent men like John Key and Steven Joyce. He says New Zealand should be looking at countries such as Germany for inspiration.

"Getting your licence in Germany is like becoming a rocket scientist. They actually accept that driving a motorcar is a skill. In this country, we believe that it is a right."

Mr Dick says adults are being hypocritical about the issue because age is irrelevant. He believes what is needed is more driver training.
