English flanker James Haskell scored two tries to lead the hosts to a 30-17 win over Wales in their Six Nations opener at Twickenham.

England scored 17 points either side of halftime after Welsh lock Alun-Wyn Jones was sin binned for tripping up England hooker Dylan Hartley to open up a decisive 20-3 lead. Welsh coach Warren Gatland says he and assistant coach Shaun Edwards were frank in their assessment of Jones' actions.

"Shaun Edwards said in the changing rooms, I hope you never, ever do that again in your career. It's absolutely stupid what he's done and to be honest, it's probably cost Wales the game today."

In other results, Ireland beat Italy 29-11 in their championship opener in Dublin.
