NZ patients get new cancer treatment

25/01/2010 11:28:01

Two New Zealand patients are the first in the southern hemisphere to receive a modified form of prostate cancer treatment known as brachytherapy.

The standard treatment, used in New Zealand for the past ten years, involves the permanent implantation of tiny radioactive "seeds"' directly into the prostate gland. The new technology uses smaller needles to implant smaller seeds.

Initial studies in the United States have shows the procedure results in less bruising and less pain and tenderness. The studies also found an improved, higher radiation dose in the prostate.

The new procedure was successfully carried out in Auckland last week on patients at Southern Cross Brightside Hospital.

The brachytherapy treatment method is an effective option for many men with early prostate cancer.
