King-Turner only major casualty

20/12/2009 8:04:01

Men's top seed Dan King-Turner is the only major casualty from the quarterfinals of the New Zealand Residential Tennis Championships being played at Albany, going down 6-2 6-2 to 20-year-old Austen Childs of Mt Maunganui.

King-Turner is ranked 257th in the world, and was using the Residentials as part-preparation for January's Heineken Open, where he has been given a wildcard entry.

Childs, who plays in the US college system, will face Adam Thompson in one semifinal while Logan Mackenzie and Marcus Daniell will contest the other.

In the women's draw number one Marina Erakovic eased past Canterbury's Leela Beattie 6-1 6-1 and will play Abbey Guthrie in the semis.

Dan King-Turner is now focusing on the New Caledonia Challenger tournament to prepare for next month's Open.

He says the high calibre of competition at the Noumea tournament will ensure a solid workout before playing in Auckland.

He has never progressed past the first round at the Heineken Open, but says if he can rediscover his best form he has a good chance of winning.

The Open starts January 11.
