Arrest over Vercoe slaying

22/11/2009 20:32:02

A teenager has been arrested over the death of prominent Rotorua man Hawea Vercoe.

The 36-year-old was allegedly punched outside the Quart Bar in Whakatane this morning. Police say an 18-year-old Opotiki man has been arrested and will appear in the Whakatane District Court tomorrow.

A spokeswoman says it's likely the arrested man will be charged with murder.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen says a post mortem examination will be carried out on Mr Vercoe tomorrow morning.

Hawea Vercoe was a councillor for Environment Bay of Plenty, a member of the Rotorua District Council's Te Arawa Standing Committee and he was the principal of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Rotoiti.
