Lawyer incurs road safety wrath

22/11/2009 13:28:01

Road safety advocates say an Auckland lawyer's apparently cavalier attitude towards drunken driving cases, is an exact reflection of the way drunken drivers think.

Barrister Patrick Winkler is under fire for suggesting on his website he can use technicalities and loopholes to defend cases. He is also pictured with a sports car and a caption reading "speedsters - I feel your pain."

CrossRoads spokeswoman Megan McPherson says there is a hard core group of people who think drunken driving is a game to be won. But she says that is why she does not want the lawyer's website taken down. She says it illustrates the attitude of many recidivist drunken drivers and she wants New Zealanders to see how they think.

Ms McPherson says the matter is not a game, and people die because of drunk drivers.

Mr Winkler says the website was never meant to underestimate the pain of those who have been involved in a serious crash. He says it was designed to provide reassurance to ordinary people who are mostly facing a first time drunken driving charge and may need to drive for a living. Mr Winkler says he stands by his sentiment around the drink driving laws but some sentences on his website will be changed.
